LARNE VS LINCOLN: A RIVALRY RENEWED
Two years ago, Lincoln Red Imps travelled to Inver Park with a place in the UEFA Conference League league phase on the line.
Tonight, we return to the same ground, at the same stage of the competition, with the same prize within touching distance.
Only this time, there is a different story waiting to be written.
Larne hold a 2-0 advantage from last week's first leg at Europa Point, meaning the Imps know exactly what is required in Northern Ireland if we are to keep our European journey alive.
And while the challenge is a significant one, there is plenty of history between these two clubs to add an extra layer to tonight's decisive encounter.
A familiar opponent
The first meeting between Lincoln and Larne came in the 2024 UEFA Conference League play-offs, when the Imps edged a seven-goal thriller 4-3 on aggregate.
After a 2-1 victory in Faro, we travelled to Inver Park holding the advantage and dreaming of securing another place in the league phase.
Bernardo Lopes' goal put the Imps ahead on the night and extended our aggregate advantage, but Larne fought back in front of their home supporters.
Andy Ryan's goals turned the tie around, with the hosts eventually claiming a 3-1 victory on the night and progressing 4-3 on aggregate.
Two years later, we have another opportunity to create a different ending.
A new chapter
Much has changed since that 2024 encounter.
New players have arrived. Others have moved on. The coaching staff has changed, while the Imps have continued to build on their reputation as one of Gibraltar's leading clubs on the European stage.
There are, however, players within the current squad who know exactly what it is like to face Larne — and what an atmosphere awaits at Inver Park.
Nauzet, Nano, Graeme Torrilla, Ethan Britto, Bernardo Lopes, Joe and Kike all featured against Larne in 2024; they know the challenge that awaits and will be hoping that tonight's return to Northern Ireland produces a very different outcome.
The task ahead
The first leg at Europa Point did not go the way we wanted.
Despite competing strongly for large periods, two late goals gave Larne a 2-0 advantage to take back to Northern Ireland.
That means the equation is simple.
Two goals are needed to level the tie and take it into extra time.
Three goals would see the Imps overturn the deficit and book our place in the UEFA Conference League league phase.
There is no margin for error, but there is also no reason to believe that the tie is beyond us.
European football has produced countless comebacks, and the Imps have already experienced their own memorable nights on the continental stage.
Tonight is another opportunity to produce one.
One more European night
This summer has already taken Lincoln through three different stages of UEFA competition.
From the Champions League to the Europa League and now the Conference League play-offs, the journey has demanded resilience, character and belief.
Now, one final hurdle stands between the Imps and another European league-phase campaign.
Inver Park is familiar territory. So too is the opponent. But tonight is not 2024.
It is 2026, a new squad, a new chapter and a new opportunity.
The memories of the last meeting will remain, but they do not define what happens tonight.
For 90 minutes - and potentially beyond - the Imps have the chance to write a different ending.
Two goals to find. One European dream to keep alive.
The next chapter of the Larne-Lincoln rivalry begins tonight.
